Assessment of Oral Health Knowledge, Attitude and Practice among School Children in Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Nepal

Oral health is an important aspect of general health in children and affects the quality of lifeand health outcomes. This study aims to trace out the oral health knowledge, attitude andpractices among the schoolchildren in Kathmandu Metropolitan city together with theassociation of these variables to sociodemographic factors and to assess the oral health statusof children with its influencing factors. This cross-sectional study included 450 school childrenof age group 12-15 years from eight different (community and private) schools from differentlocalities of metropolitan city. It was found that out of total participants Most of the participants(79.8%) had high knowledge, almost all had positive attitude but only less than half (42.2%)had adequate practice towards oral health. Moreover, the prevalence of oral health problem is57.6%. The study concludes that in spite of good oral hygiene, satisfactory knowledge andpositive attitude towards oral hygiene in children, they have not good practice of oral hygiene.The study will also serve as a reference value for use in future evaluation to help measure theeffectiveness of the planned activities.
